We conduct both cross-sectional and prospective self-report studies with large samples, as well as laboratory-based experimental studies with smaller samples. We incorporate a variety of different measurement techniques in our laboratory-based studies, including the use of eye-tracking equipment, computerized cognitive tasks, clinical interviews, and validated self-report measures.

The majority of research conducted in the lab focuses on how people relate to and regulate internal experience, and how such regulation, or lack thereof, can result in short- and long-term emotional distress. Within the broader context of emotion regulation, Dr. Bardeen is particularly interested in the role that higher-order cognitive abilities play in the development and maintenance of anxiety and trauma-related pathology.
Additionally, in the past few years, Dr. Bardeen and other members of the lab have become increasingly interested in scale development and validation research. Although this research comes second to our primary focus, we believe that it is important to conduct these studies to help ensure that psychometrically sound measures are being used in our field of study. |
